Colorectal polyps are growths found in the large intestines. Many times these growths are benign, but occasionally, theses growths, if left untreated, could become diseased and develop into cancerous colorectal polyps. A colonoscopy is the best preventative measure to avoid cancerous colorectal polyps. Doctors recommend most people have their first colonoscopy at age 50, followed by periodic exams over time. However, for those in a high risk category, a colonoscopy should be conducted at an earlier age.

Colorectal cancer remains one of the most commonly diagnosed cancers, but it is also one of the most treatable if detected early. Preventative action to help identify cancerous colorectal polyps can be done with a colonoscopy. Our state-of-the-art facility at the Colonoscopy Center of Excellence is equipped with a highly qualified medical team who are experts in the diagnosis of cancerous colorectal polyps.

How Are Cancerous Colorectal Polyps Diagnosed?

A colonoscopy can be used both as a diagnostic and screening procedure. If you have been suffering from recurring gastric pain and symptoms such as gas/bloating, bowel changes, or blood in your stool, then your physician would perform a colonoscopy to locate the cause of your problem.

Prior to the colonoscopy, you are required to cleanse your colon. This way, the large intestine is clear of any obstructions, and your physician is able to see any abnormalities. If cancer is suspected, a device called a colonoscope is used by the surgeon to inspect for polyps, tumors or other diseased tissue. If any abnormal growths are found, samples of diseased tissue and possible cancerous colorectal polyps would be taken. A pathologist would be given the samples for diagnosis and findings reported to your doctor. If further tests or treatments are recommended, your doctor would consult with you.
