A recent study showed that people who have had colon cancer are 15 percent more likely to develop another cancer than those with no history of colon cancer.

The study, conducted at the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center in Seattle, used data from cancer registries from nine states, finding that cancers in the small intestine, kidney, lung, stomach, bladder and endometrial cancers were all more common in people with a history of colon cancer.

The findings of these studies are important for colon cancer survivors because it reinforces the need for routine checkups for all types of cancer following colon cancer treatment. Since one in 20 people will be diagnosed with colon cancer during their lifetime, it is imperative that those who have had colon cancer undergo regular cancer screenings.

Our world-renowned surgeons at La Peer Health Systems offer safe and cutting-edge cancer screenings, as well as minimally-invasive treatment procedures. Contact our Beverly Hills surgery center today to schedule an appointment with a board-certified physician.

Colon Cancer Screening

For those who have no history of colon cancer, the American Cancer Society recommends routine colonoscopies starting at age 50 (or 45 for African Americans), with follow-up screenings every 10 years.

However, if you have a family history of colon cancer, you should begin routine colonoscopies starting 10 years before the age your family member was diagnosed with the cancer.

Likewise, for patients who have had colon cancer, it is important to follow your doctor’s advice and instructions following colon cancer treatment.
